Turkish warplanes have killed at least 20 people in an airstrike late 28 December on the border with Iraq, a Turkish news agency reported 29 December, quoting a provincial governor. The target zone of the air strike was an area frequented by members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), who use a mule track to allegedly smuggle heavy weaponry, ammunition and explosives into Turkey, the General Staff’s statement said. The overnight airstrike seemed to have been aimed at suspected Kurdish guerrillas infiltrating into Turkey, but locals told the media that the victims were smugglers carrying diesel fuel on mules.
